Artist's Statement
I painted this watercolor from life on Strathmore Plate illustration board. The illustration board is fun to paint on because it doesn't absorb much paint or water, which makes it easy to simulate glossy surfaces, such as in the ceramics and glass. Also, because it doesn't absorb much, it is easier to pick the paint up and produce transparent effects, as in the olive oil bottle.

I use back lighting for a still life because I like to avoid a light side and a shadow side of an object. I don't want to express form in the objects so much as their intrinsic color. It was fun to reflex the veggie colors into the ceramics, and I used white to unify the painting.

About the Artist
The unpredictability and fluidity of watercolor are what excites me. I love to watch the colors blend and the painting paint itself. I took a class in watercolor thirty years ago and fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted off and on while working as an RN. Other than taking a workshop with Janet Rogers and one with Skip Lawerence, I have been learning on my own with books by Charles Reid. I love his direct painting approach and his loose, watery style. Charcoal just came naturally for me. I think I am drawn to these two mediums because they both let me work in a spontaneous, expressive way
