October 2021 Presenter: Sandy Dimke

We invite you to join us at our meeting on Monday October 18, 2021 for some fun and fellowship! This is our regular monthly members meeting. We HOPE to meet in person with a Zoom option for those uncomfortable or unable to meet in person. Watch for any updates as the Board may have to react with changes due to Covid related shifts. Hope to see you there - members and guests welcome!

For October, our presenter will be Sandy Dimke, from Beaufort, South Carolina will be presenting:

The ELEMENTS of COMPOSITION

The presentation will be geared to both the fine artist and the photographer.

Sandy is a photographer and an artist. When she creates a photo, from conception to execution to post processing, she is doing just that … “creating” her work of art, not merely documenting a scene.

Sandy truly believes that Composition is a key aspect of a good work of art. It’s a big part of what makes a piece eye-catching and dynamic or calm and soothing. A good composition has just enough detail and good balance and it shapes the viewer’s experience of the artwork.

Sandy’s presentation will focus on the elements (or guidelines) that should be considered, to draw the viewer’s eye to the most interesting or significant area as you create your artwork.

The presentation is filled with concrete examples and ideas to inspire your next creation.

NOTE: We have made an adjustment to the time and location for our meetings due to a permanent change to earlier closing hours at Crooked Creek Park. Please be sure to make a note on your calendar and plan accordingly!

Refreshments/Social Time: 5pm-6pm

Meeting/Presentation: 6pm-8pm

  • In light current high rates of infection and CDC guidelines, we request that everyone wear masks during the meeting except when eating. The Board will revisit this policy as the situation evolves or park policies change.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Sandy Dimke

Photo of Artist: Sandy Dimke

Sandy Dimke enjoys creating art through the medium of photography. Her goal is always to freeze a moment in time in a creative manner, either by unique camera angles or adding a different perspective with post processing. She values the interplay of color, texture and patterns that unify the image. A traveler at heart, her photos try to capture the excitement of the world we live in, whether at home in the Lowcountry of South Carolina or in more exotic locales around the globe.

Born and raised in Schenectady, New York, Sandy graduated from Nazareth College (BA'70) and received her MBA in Marketing from the University at Albany (NY) ('72). After spending almost 25 years in architectural photography in Connecticut, she and her husband, Russ, now reside in Beaufort, South Carolina where she concentrates on fine art photography.

Sandy was instrumental in founding the Photography Club of Beaufort in 2005. Currently she is the 1st Vice Chair of the Print Division of the Photographic Society of America . Among the proudest awards Sandy has received are Best in Show (2010) Carolinas Nature Photographer's Conference; and three First Place medals at the Photographic Society of America Conferences (2017-19). Another rewarding moment was in September of 2019, when she was invited to be a guest exhibitors at the Photographic Society of America Conference in Spokane Washington where 17 photographs were on view.

Sandy has published two photography books "Hands Across the Lowcountry" (2011) and "Cats of Beaufort" (2015) . Her photographs have graced the cover of "Charleston Salt and Iron" (2016) and "Along Southern Roads" (2019). Collections of her images have appeared in "Southern Traditions" (2018) and "DownSize" (2019).

In 2019 Sandy was inducted into the National Association of Women Artists and currently serves on the Board of the South Carolina chapter of NAWA. She is active in, and exhibits her work at Beaufort Art Association Gallery.
