Our presenter for October is: Michael Story.

The Title of Michael's Presentation is:


"Mastering Color Fundamentals and

How to Apply Them to Your Paintings"


Whether you work in watercolor, acrylic, pastel or oil, you're invited to join artist Michael Story as he discusses and demonstrates the key fundamentals for mastering color.


Michael has painted and prepared extensive color charts showing how to lighten and darken the colors on your palette, mixing greens and grays, and how and when to use white and black in your mixtures. Monochromatic, complementary and analogous color schemes are discussed and demonstrated concluding with some of Michael's finished paintings that utilize these painting methods.

Michael Story


Michael Story earned a BFA in Fine Art from the University of South Carolina in 1975. He later traveled to New York, studying pastel and oil painting under internationally know artist, Daniel Greene. Today, Michael Story is an award­winning artist and member of Oil Painters of America and the Southeastern Pastel Society. He guest lectures, juries art shows and regularly teaches oil, acrylic and pastel painting throughout tile United States.


Story has conducted workshops at such prestigious art centers as Huntsville Museum of Art in Huntsville, AL, Hudson River Valley Workshops in Greenville, NY, John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, Winslow Art Center in Bainbridge Island, WA, Art of the Carolina's in Raleigh, NC, Peninsula School of Art in Fish Creek, WI, and Crealde School of Art in Winter Park, FL. Students also travel from around the country to attend his 2-day painting classes in his Lexington, SC studio.


Story has work showcased in the Bush Presidential Library in Houston, Texas, and his paintings have been reproduced by major publishers such as Canadian Art Prints of British Columbia and distributed worldwide.

A reminder to our members:


Each month, we hold a new themed contest in the TAP Gallery. All CCAL members are invited to participate. Simply create your best piece according to the theme and bring it to hang on the start date listed below. (Be sure to bring your gallery wall label.) Only original works only are permitted in judged theme contests (no prints please). Exhibits typically change the same night as our monthly member meeting. Be sure to take home your artwork at the end of the exhibit!! A monthly Award Winner will be selected and awarded a ribbon for themed exhibits. Happy creating! In order to give our members more time to paint ahead for the TAP Gallery Exhibits, we will be trying to keep a yearly list of upcoming themes published in advance.
