About the Art

"Luminous Lotus" - 24" x 36", oil on stretched canvas, $825

The lotus plant is a perennial, aquatic plant that thrives in nutrient-rich, murky conditions. This plant enjoys an active and interesting daily life cycle. Lotuses root themselves in the mud, their lengthy stems reaching upward to find the top of the water. There, the lush blossoms grow, and as the lotus blooms, the blossoms unfold one by one. Petal by petal, each one emerges pristine from the mucky water thanks to a protective outer coating that repels dirt and water. I think that is so cool! These day-blooming plants submerge and close up at night, and reawaken above the water every morning. The petals last for just a handful of days before shedding. The bright clear color they add to a green pond are always sure to make you smile. This one seems perfect for display in this location!

This is a fun composition with the cool rich turquoises in the boats contrasting with the warm golden oranges in the sky. And the deep warm orange reflected light at sunrise lit end of the boats pulls me right in - oh my! It all creates a lot of drama and impact. I hope you enjoy the results!

About the Artist

Barbara Teusink

Barbara Teusink is an award-winning artist with oil paintings hanging in private collections across the US. A Crooked Creek Art League Master Artist, she has won multiple First Place awards as well as numerous other awards in local and regional competitions. She is a juried-in member of Oil Painters of America. Her work has been featured in a book: The Great American Paint-In (available on Amazon).

 In her youth, Barbara loved drawing and other creative pursuits. However, in college she took the “sensible” route and earned a business degree. Her artistic pursuits were put on hold during her many years of a demanding career. Upon retirement, she decided to rekindle her creative side and took up painting.

 A big believer in the power of community in both art and life, Barbara is very active in the Crooked Creek Art League. A multiple term past president, she currently runs the digital presence for CCAL as well as planning and managing the League’s community art projects all around Chapin.

 A very active member of the Crooked Creek Art League, Barbara has served in numerous roles including two terms as president. She currently serves as co-Webmaster and Social Media Manager, Parliamentarian and Community Art Chair. She served as team leader for the popular "The Arts Sail Into Chapin" sailboat project last year.

Barbara’s subjects reflect the natural world with florals, birds, animals and landscapes. A contemporary realist, she strives to capture and preserve the fleeting moments of life; an expression, the light, the season, a striking arrangement, or scene. Barbara also accepts commissions. She loves working with clients to help bring their memories and ideas to life in a custom painting. She offers private lessons and mentoring for aspiring artists.

The Lotus Mind & Body Gallery is located in the Lobby and Nail room of the spa. The art can be viewed during their normal business hours.

The rotating exhibit of fine art showcases a wide variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, mixed media and photography. Originals and prints can be discovered here with new displays every month. Each piece of art is labeled with the artist's contact information.

This exhibit features two pieces by a single artist each month.
