ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Angel Allen

Mosaic and ceramic artist, Columbia, SC

“We are mosaics. Pieces of light, love, history, stars… glued together with magic and music and words.”

-- Anita Krizzan, poet

As a mosaic artist, I am always in awe of seeing broken fragments before me, and then watching them, through my hands and heart, come together into something beautiful and whole. Clay is no different. I start with a lump of mud and transform it into an object that can be both beautifully utilitarian and sculptural. That’s magic to me.

Each mosaic or clay form I make builds on the one preceding it. These creations emerge from my teaching experiences, my artist residencies, my relationships and my observations through travel, often as close as my backyard.

When I lead a workshop, the process is repeated through the hands of all the participants. What a great thing to see! We all start out with the same materials, yet every mosaic and every clay form ends up being a reflection of the maker revealing our differences in a spirit of community.

A graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in fine art, I have spent the last thirty-two years immersed in some sort of messy art making and teaching while raising four sons, launching them on their own trajectory and settling back again to an empty nest, a back yard studio and a very understanding husband.

A reminder to our members:

The theme for the artwork in the TAP Gallery for Sept/Oct will be "Feathered Friends". Be sure to bring some art to hang in the gallery and compete in the monthly contest.

Also, artists with artwork from the "Angels Among Us" Contest Art display should plan to take home their pieces from that exhibit at the meeting.
