October 8, 2016, Hurricane Matthew slammed into South Carolina. The storm made landfall 30 miles north of Charleston wreaking havoc on everything in its path. One of the hardest hit areas was Hunting Island State Park. This pristine park was almost destroyed. Trees were toppled and thrown against others. Buildings and other trees were obliterated by the storm surge.  Where people once picnicked, there was nothing but devastation.  On June 2, 2017, Hunting Island State Park was reopened. On October 18, 2018 as I drove up the winding access road towards the beach, I could still see areas of the forest where trees were still holding each other up.  I parked and walked to the beach as I turned a corner, I saw remnants of the power of Mother Nature. A section of the beach had not been cleared and I was filled with emotion. This photograph is one of many that I took that day. It is the whole root section of the whole tree that was thrown in the water like a tooth pick by the wind.
