Congratulations to our Spotlight Artist of the Month for July: Debra K. Kelly!
About This Piece:
The subject of this painting was one of the lorikeets in the interactive walk-through aviary at Riverbanks Zoo. The striking rainbow colors and lively antics of these friendly birds attract many visitors to the zoo every year. The lorikeet was painted from an unusual angle on its branch, as it worked the crowd for attention and food. This piece is pastel on pastel paper.
Debra is a native of South Carolina and recently moved from the Irmo area to the Chapin area. She started her painting career approximately 15 years ago, beginning with pen and pencil drawings, and progressing to the pastel medium in order to capture the vibrant colors she saw in nature. In her paintings, she incorporates liberal touches of color and texture, unusual angles, and detailed drawing to capture movement and life in her subjects. Debra is a member of the Crooked Creek Art League, Member of Excellence of the Southeastern Pastel Society in Atlanta, and an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America in New York.
