Artist Statement

I see myself as a dual faceted Artist.  It’s difficult for me to commit to a particular genre subject as I see beauty and inspiration in everything; yes, even a stop sign.  In most given days, I enjoy weaving together hints of abstract and surreal imagery into a narrative that was sparked by a fond playful memory. I often explore the space between reality and imagination, balancing figurative gestures with dreamlike atmospheres in a whimsical and humorous dialogue.  If you could imagine yourself sitting in childhood classroom and being reprimanded for initiated shenanigans, that would be my abstract expression and then correcting those behaviors by applying brush to canvas in a calming, mature specific intent, that’s when you discover the balance of my artistic vision and generally when painting the serenity of landscapes come through.  Landscapes, dominated mostly by water bodies, captivate my attention with slow breaths and deep pause in a reminiscent sort of way and connect me with past experiences and future promises.  It’s my hope to invite viewers to pause, reflect, and reimagine elements of the familiar in a rather Wait, What? response.

About the Artist

Linda Cannup

ree

Linda Drawdy Cannup is a Columbia, SC area native, who specializes in acrylic, alcohol inks, and watercolor/gauche paints.  She is a self-taught Artist who continues to be inspired and influenced through techniques of respected Artists.

Utilizing a blend of techniques to infuse saturated colors and highlights with vividly bold, spontaneous brushstrokes, Linda’s paintings convey dynamic motion while also maintaining the delicate details.  Drawing inspiration from cultural memory, personal reflection, and the rhythms of everyday life, her art speaks in both whispers of playfulness and bold declarations – celebrating beauty and the transformation of imagination.  Linda has spent a great deal of time working on commissioned requests and has completed pieces for clients in regions from south Florida to the state of Oregon; however, she mostly enjoys focusing on speaking her voice and her own vision without a structured agenda.

Many of Linda’s works are featured in a local restaurant, art shows, galleries and events in the Vista community as well as restaurants on the SC coast.   She is a member of the Crooked Creek Art League and the Seacoast Artist Guild.  She participates annually by performing in a live paint in the Vista community during the Vista Lights event, as well as during the Artista Vista event and First Thursday on Main.

In her free time, Linda enjoys traveling with her husband to coastal areas and lake living from which she draws inspiration.
