Artist Bio

Shirley Long

photo of artist Shirley Long

Shirley Long followed the path her soul searched for by becoming a narrative artist.  She has seen her God given artistic talent bloom as her emotions healed from the loss of a young spouse, and later a young adult son.  Shirley was born and raised in South Carolina where her art reflects its history and beauty.

She specializes in landscapes and portraits.  She enjoys painting with realism and reflects personality in portraiture.  She hopes the viewer will connect emotionally with her paintings.  Her inspiration comes from nature and everyday scenery.  Her painting mediums are oil, acrylic, pastels, watercolor and colored pencils.

She has exhibited and won many awards.  The sweepstakes award at the South Carolina State Fair and placed in the Edisto Art Guild Paint Out 2020, placed 3rd at Camden Art Paint Out, placed 2nd at Crooked Creek Art League.  She has donated paintings to fund missionaries and terminally ill patients.

She has largely been educated by practice, mistakes, and curiosity.  She has benefited from color pencil sessions with Gretchen Evans Parker, CPSA, CPX, membership in the Society of Decorative Painters – SC Palmetto Painters Chapter, Corley Mill Art Group, Michel McNinch, teacher/instructor, and visual artist, Beth Tockey Williams, pastel artist; and Dale Bishop, artist and teacher.
