Workshop Description (from the instructor)

Class will begin with topics on materials, palette, and composition.

We will cover various techniques of drawing along with preliminary charcoal

sketches, value and color studies, and fundamentals of color mixing in order prepare

for the final painting. Classical approach of monochromatic under painting, directed

observation and application of color, followed by glazing techniques will be

discussed and shown. Class will consist of lectures, slide analysis, and

Individual critiques, while the student paints his or her own landscape. Students will

bring their own reference material to paint from, whether it is a photograph or a

small color sketch.

Oil Paint Colors (You may also work with a limited or pre-existing palette)

Titanium White

Black

Transparent Red Oxide

Cadmium Red

Alizarin Crimson

Cadmium Orange or permanent orange

Cadmium Yellow or permanent yellow

Yellow Ochre

Ultramarine Blue

Cobalt Blue

Cerulean Blue or Manganese Blue Hue

Viridian Green

Sketch Pad and Pencils

Palette knifes in assorted shapes

Palette (wood toned) or similar (disposable palette is ok)

Mineral spirits with a Container (Gamblin Gamsol is best)

Brushes – Bristle brushes are best in various sizes (#1, 4, 6, 8, 10)

Mop brushes or cheap hardware store wood handle bristle brushes (1”-2”)

Paper towels (Viva recommended)

Trash Bag (grocery size)

Baby Wipes (good for cleanup)

Painting Surfaces – (Size will Depend on how big you want to paint)

Canvas Board, Panels, Stretched Canvas, or Prepared Paper

In addition, please bring at least (2) 6”x8” panels for color-note sketches.

Registration is open to CCAL members only until January 23 for $150 ($50 minimum deposit required).

Registration is open to all artists beginning January 24. Non-members pay $180 ($50 minimum deposit required).
