Artist's Statement

This trail marker depicts the Lake Murray Purple Martins. Every time we go out to Bomb island to the Purple Martins, whether it be early morning or sunset, it amazes me to think that they picked our beautiful Lake Murray as their roosting place in their journey back and forth so many miles. It is so hard to comprehend many things in nature and we are very lucky to be a part of their beautiful and fantastic show on our lake. If you haven’t ever made the trip to Bomb Island, which actually has its own very compelling story to be told, please do. You won’t be sorry.

About the Artwork

Purple Martins Majesty is a 4 foot tall artistic trail marker with a sailboat on top. The metal form was created by Steven Reed and Shelly Fugua. The artistry on the marker was done by Kay Stallings.

About the Artist

Born in northern New York, Kay lived in Georgia for almost 50 years. She and her husband Jack have two sons and three grandchildren. Kay started painting as a teenager for fun, but only work on projects for family and friends. In 1999, she started painting murals with a friend in Atlanta and was actually paid for work that she loved. In 2018, she moved to Chapin to be closer to their son and were lucky to find a beautiful home on Lake Murray. Kay says “the friends I have made through CCAL are some of the most amazing, talented and welcoming people I have ever known. So, thank you CCAL for helping to make Chapin my home."
