Gretchen Evans Parker

I am a Midwesterner raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Luckily I married a North Carolina boy and now my adopted roots are Southern. Accepting the title of “artist” is quite foreign. I only began to draw graphite portraits at the end of the last century.  The use of color in my work really is a personal 21st Century concept! I am self taught with a little help from a couple workshops lead by well known colored pencil artists. In my 35 years practicing occupational therapy, my pipe dream was to paint a portrait that I was not embarrassed to show someone outside my immediate family! I have recently have begun to teach colored pencil classes to new enthusiasts.

I love the medium of colored pencil. It is not messy and is very portable. Color mixing is achieved directly on the paper via multiple color layers to achieve the desired saturation and hue. The technique results in rich vibrant tones. Detail is my forte and I view much of my work as near photorealism.  I have only recently begun to branch out into watercolor and watercolor pencils to enhance my colored pencil work.
